Quite frankly it is simple economics. The cost to mine and process ore to make metal is often more cost affective than recycling existing metals. Over the past few years the demand for metals has been extremely high. Just look at the price of copper. Right now there is enough demand to keep prices high and to make it cost effective to both mine and recycle metals. But think about this, would you rather pay twice as much for something made from recycled metal or half as much for something that had to be mined?
