How much is it for a bottle of spirits in an average Pattaya or Bangkok supermarket (please give bottle size). I appreciate that imported spirits are pricey, but I only put Coke or orange juice in it, so it does not matter if the local stuff is a bit rough! Thanks to you all, especially Gerald!

International name brand Spirits used to be about the same as duty free prices, but the Thai government has recently introduced a bunch of health incentives, one of which was to raise the taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. It's still cheap. The local stuff at the supermarket is only a few dollars less than the imported stuff, "name" brands that are made under licence in the Philippines. Bizarrely, 7-11 is often cheaper than the supermarket. Also, bizarrely, at certain times of the day and night you can only buy a minimum of 10 litres ! In baht, a 700 ml bottle of Gin (made in the Philippines eg Gilbeys Gin) was about 380 baht. Gordon's Gin from England was about 680 baht. The local rum may have been around 350, I really can't remember.

Whiskey is the most popular spirit in Thailand, you can buy brands like Sang Thip, Sang Som and Mekong for around 160-180 Baht for a 70cl. (7/10 litre) bottle, most are pretty nasty though. The best Thai whiskey for the price is Blend 285, it's made by Red Bull Distillery and is very smooth and sells for around 190-210 Baht depending on where you buy it, it's well worth the extra money. There's local vodka like Uncle Tom's that sells for around 199 Baht for a 70cl. bottle. You can buy some imported spirits at reasonable prices, 70cl. bottles of Dewars and Ballantines sell for around 569 Baht, 100 Pipers and Benmore I think are around 299 Baht. You can also get some decent Vodka and Gin like Gilbeys for 329 Baht or so. Hard liquor is not luxury taxed in Thailand like wine is, which is very expensive. Liquor is pretty reasonably priced here even though taxes were raised about a week ago by between 7-9%. If you like whiskey, try the Blend 285.
