So here's a question for those of you that have imported dogs or know your AKC laws backwards and forwards. If a dog is imported from another country, assuming it's registered in its home country, what's the deal with registering that dog, or making eligible any offspring that dog produces able to be AKC registered?I know it's possible as I have AKC registered dogs with parents born outside the US, but I assume it's limited to certain registries and/or countries and there's some sort of complicated process. Any links to the info direct from the AKC would be preferable. I've looked for it and can't seem to come up with any information. If you want to lecture me on something please read this first:No I don't have plans to breed anything in the near future nor have I purchased a dog of foreign registry, it's a question for a potential future situation as I'm currently overseasYes I'm experienced in breeding. I have people I can ask but it's somewhere around 2 am in the states and it's bugging me that I couldn't find it on the AKC websiteNo I'm not traveling with a young puppyYes I've taken dogs internationally beforeYes I compete my dogs in conformation, retrieving, obedience, and field competitionsYes I do OFA/CERF and take all the other precautions of responsible breedingPlease no lectures on anything I left out as I'm a huge advocate of responsible breeding practices and adopting from shelters if at all possible, the dogs I'm talking about are working dogs and cannot be substituted with shelter dogs

http://www.akc.org/pdfs/rulebooks/GASPEC.pdfI would read it more thoroughly, but I think the gist of it is: -In order to be registered in the stud book, the dog has to be in the US, you need the standard 3 generation pedigree, microchip or tattoo, and be of a recognized breed.-The litter of an AKC reigstered bitch and a non-AKC dog is not eligible to be recorded with the AKC unless the dog becomes AKC registered-Whole litters born outside the US are not eligible for registration, but individuals from that litter can become separately registered-It also states that AKC has the right to examine each pedigree and ok or deny it, for whatever reason. There are certain acceptable foreign registries that are listed in the link above. The link above has all the details and forms that have to be turned in. I hope that helps!

Here is a list of acceptable foreign registries http://www.akc.org/rules/special_registry_services.cfmIf a dog is registered with one of them it can also be AKC registered when its imported. There are also more links on that page about registering foreign bred dogs. If the registry isn't listed there a purebred recognized by AKC could still be registered under the PAL/ILP program which would require them to be spayed/neutered first. Bindi's dam is Netherlands import and was registered AKC when she came over. A couple more links http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm There is form needed to get the dog registered with AKC. Oops, the mastform link brings you to a page where you can download a variety of AKC forms. Here is the direct link to the foreign reg. form and will open in Adobe reader as its a pdf file http://www.akc.org/pdfs/foreign.pdfAnd the dog registration FAQ http://www.akc.org/contact/answer_center/faq_dogreg.cfm
