what if the US stopped exporting any food.?
If the USA also stopped importing food, it would be close to a wash. Foods now imported to the USA would be available for export to other countries. One assumes that if the USA stopped exporting food, it would cut down on agricultural inputs, and many of those would be available for other countries. The USA for several years has been running significant trade deficits, and by extension, not selling food exports would make that imbalance greater, unless of course the imported food were stopped too.If the USA cut off exports of food, but planned to continue its imports of foods, it might discover that those imports have just become a lot more costly, and of course the USA will have a lot less money to buy those imports.Places like Canada, which both buy and sell a lot of food across our border with the USA would have to change to buying more of what we buy from Central and South America. That market shift might never come back to the USA once established. All in all, the harm to the USA may be comparable to the harm this would do to the rest of the world. But every decade we come closer to the time when USA will not have any net exports of food. This is likely to happen without any direct decision to do it.
