The shortage is be caused right here in the US by our Government subsidies programs for corn to produce more ethanol. Growers are jumping over to corn because of the price along with the subsidies, farmers that are growing corn are making a killing now. Bushels of corn has doubled in price to the grower so more and more growers are switching to corn instead of other products that the world needs. China is the main country that has increased its out put on rice and at the same time they have stopped all exports of rice out of their country.

Ethanol production is causing the rice shortage. When you remove a large percentage of the grain supply from the worlds foodstocks it puts pressure on all the others and causes shortages.
