We bought a 20 pound bag of jasmine rice and it has these red or black little beetles with six legs and antennae in it. So, whenever I want to make rice I have to check for them. Does anyone know what these little bugs are called and how to get rid of them and possibly where they came from. Is it the store (it's a little oriental market in the cultural district of the city)? Is it possibly the brand of rice we get? (The bag is white, plastic and has ITC on it but the I looks like a little stick figure, and is imported from Thailand) We always buy that rice from that store but I never see those bugs. Help?

It is my understanding that some bugs are in flour, cornmeal, cereals and rice when you buy it. I guess that's how yours got there. You need to throw the rice out if there are beetles all through it. (I think they are called weevles). Anyway, I was told that if you freeze these products or microwave the package for 5 minutes and then put them in plastic, air tight containers, it won't happen again. The bugs like the glue that adheres some of the packages. If you have instant oatmeal and packaged gravies, etc. you should also store them in plastic containers or zip lock bags. That should solve the problem.
