Some rice has more gluten and starch than others. Arborio rice for example is very starchy. It is the rice used in risotto. The longer the rice, the less starch it has. Ultimately the amount of water you add to the rice contributes to the finished product. The longer you let it absorb water, the stickier it gets.

Just read your packages they do tell what is in it and what it is made out of and where it comes from and also the size of servings and vitamins and fats and so on. Rice comes extra long and so on. Buy the one you like. Most people buy extra long for some reason but it is nice to try different ones and to make it healthy go with brown rice or try some wild rice.

That would be Mahatma brand. And despite it's Indian-sounding name, Mahatma is an American brand. Most of the others answering you are on the button about the different styles of white rice.Ignore the person who said white rice can cause heart attack. If that statement really were true, China and Japan (the countries with the highest per capita consumption of white rice) would also have the world's highest per capita rate of deaths due to heart attacks.

In answer to your question: The basic white rice used in Chinese restaurants is LONG GRAIN RICE. Also commonly found in any market.RICE 101. Rice types as follows
NON-STICKY RICE TYPES):LONG GRAIN RICE (Most common and basic white, skinny type rice. and found in the markets)JASMINE RICE (usually from Thailand, another form of long grain, non-sticky yet fragrant rice. If anyone is diabetic, avoid this one as it contains one of of the highest levels of starch)BASMATI RICE (basic white rice, non-sticky and the lowest level of starch. Places like CHIPOTLE uses basmati rice for their "Burrito Bowl")LONG GRAIN BROWN RICE(STICKY RICE are usually short & medium grain rice):MEDIUM GRAIN RICESHORT GRAIN RICE (Brands: Hinode; Botan; Mahatma; etc...aka: sushi rice). SHORT GRAIN BROWN RICEARBORIO RICE (commonly used for Paella and/or Risotto)THAI STICKY RICE (Very gluteny. Found in Thai specialty stores)Hope this helps. |
