Keeping Cool When It's Hot Outside
I have lived in Florida for most of my life. The weather can often be pretty extreme in the summertime leaving you indoors where the air-conditioning is. After my children were born I realized that staying inside was not an option. There is the pool and the beach, but what about those times when outdoor sports are what your child wants to do?
It is best to avoid extreme activity and exercise during times when the temperature is high. When there are times that you can't avoid being outside because of a job or other circumstances, you should be aware of the symptoms and signs of heat exhaustion.
Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea/vomiting, and fainting are all signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion. If left untreated, they may lead to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.
Of course there are obvious things you can do to keep someone from overheating. Dressing cool and providing lots of hydration are a couple of ways. Some of the other things you can do if someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion are, have them rest, get a cool shower, bath or sponge bath, and get them into an air-conditioned environment. Never use ice as treatment. Ice can restrict blood vessels causing them to prevent the bodies natural ability to cool off. A cool cloth with cold water is better than ice.
I have found something that also works really well to prevent heat exhaustion. Cooling products which are not ice based. Some of the cooling products available are, cooling vest, cooling seats, ball cap coolers, and helmet coolers. These items can be charged up quickly by placing them in ice water in a cooler or even in your fridge before going out. Cooling products can last for hours and when they lose their charge, they can be recharged over and over again. If you enjoy the outdoors or have to work in a hot environment, the benefits of preventing heat exhaustion are better all the way around. Your performance will be better and your mind will be sharper.
