My destination of choice is Bayahibe on the southeast corner of the island, on the Caribbean coast. It's still quaint, yet growing. There are only about 7 hotels in that area compared to the sprawl of Punta Cana. I like that it's close to local towns and cities and it's easy to get around so you're not trapped at an AI. I don't want to be one of those who get off a plane and drive 20 minutes to their resort where they have people to attend to their every need, returning home to say they'd "been to the Dominican Republic." Great for them (a number of my friends are that way), but I want to do more in the way of getting to know the country than just sitting on a beach.
