If you plan on visiting Washington D.C., I would try staying in Fairfax County. It's definitely an economic and convenient choice; you'll have easy access to all the DC sights. What's great about Virginia, specifically Fairfax, is that there are tons of great things to do and they are all relatively close to one another.
