Have twice in the last few years rented a old VW Campervan, vans were from about the mid 1980's. We stayed mainly in National Park and State Park campsites but did Boondock a few times with no problems. Park site are basic with just a water tap and a vault toilet but the views are in many very special and the only cost about $12 to $15. It can be hard to get into some sites like Yosemite and Yellowstone but the others were no problem.Got the vans from just out side San Francisco at Redwood City..
