Hi, As a avid surfer and an Australian there are literally thousands of place to surf. We are a big island and surf is everywhere. Its pretty cold water in Melbourne at the moment. So head north to Queensland. Noosa in Queensland is a great place to learn how to surf. Water is warm and there are plenty of good breaks for beginners and to advanced. I learned here to surf about 10 years ago and go Noosa frequently. Plenty of cheap surf schools there also...... Hope this helps..
