Well you're really talking about a vast area here so it all depends upon where you intend to go. Did you have a particular country in mind. Due to its popularity and the relative commercial competitiveness in the country South Africa is in fact one of the cheapest places to visit. The country has a variety of accommodation to suit almost every budget. Areas such as Botswana and Namibia can be a little more pricey- in Botswana particularly there is an ethos of low (environmental) impact- high quality tourism. I think the general rule- like most places- is you get what you pay for
