Where to go in only 1 month?
Well, you say the western side - I haven't been there, but I can tell you about the eastern side if that is of any use. Sydney obviously has plenty to see - you could stay up in Manly and get the boat in to sydney harbour each day, quite a fun experience. The blue mountains are great as well, particulaly if you like hiking. Staying in Port Douglas instead of Cairns is an option if you want something a little quieter, I stayed at Tropic Breeze Caravan Park, they have little bungalows (4 person) which are really good value and just 100yds from the beach and a short walk from the town. Also, tours depart to the barrier reef from here. Heading up in to the rainforest is fun too - there's some great hostelly type places, and some fun activities - jungle night walks, zip lines, croc cruises, that sort of thing.
