I'm in eighth grade, currently reside in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada and I'm sick of school already. I heard about attending summer school and speaking with councilors, but I don't know much about the credit system. There was something about the earliest age to graduate being 16, is this true? I'll be going into high school next year, but I'm a social outcast, I don't care about it and I don't want to deal with the drama. I just want to get it over with as soon as possible. I've also heard high school is the best years of ones life and I don't care.
My plan was to take a year off after I had finished school and travel around the world then go to college. I want to major in art, music and maybe business in college. Do I -need- to finish school to be successful and does anyone know the odds of it happening? Is there a way of twisting the brain of a councilor to graduate early? Please, please inform me. Any information would be amazing and much appreciated. Thank you so much. |

You can graduate early, but not usually through the actual school.
The counselors or whoever plans the students schedules at your school will try to throw up a series of obstacles in your way, preventing you from graduating early or doing independent studies; which is how you graduate early. I'm a junior, and once this year is over, i'm done with HS, and I'll be going to the local community college and renting a condo with two of my buddies, and have our 'last hurrah' for two years before we all head to our seprate UC's. I'm doing a combination of independent studies and classes at my local community college. While you won't technically get a HS diploma from your school, you will get your degree from the community college, and if you can maintain a consitently good GPA and really bust your @ss for those test scores, it will carry much more weight than a HS diploma in the eyes of UC's anyway. Just because most people take the typical, 4 year high school beaten path, doesn't mean it's the best. |

Usually it is possible, by testing out. You have to prove you know all of the things you will learn in highschool, by taking tests on those subjects, and passing them with pretty high scores.
Also, once out of school, you won't just have free reign. You will have to grow up, and fast. Trust me, going through highschool will be better, only because you get to avoid being a grown up so soon! I know a guy who dropped out of school in 8th grade who makes over $150,000 USD a year, but that was by luck, and being in the right place at the right time. Not that school will help you get a job mind you. |

There are several ways to obtain a high school diploma, either through online programs, or attend schools or colleges. However, another form of earning a degree is through a variety of free programs offered by the education department.
