Default Under 18 travelling across border for day trip without parents?

Hi, I am wanting to do a day trip across the U.S Canada border, over onto the American side. I am 17 and would be going with my friend who is 18. She obviously does not need a letter, but what do I need to get across for a day trip? (Oh, and I would be driving) Thanks, Braden
EDIT: And why does she need a signed letter if she is over 18? What difference would it make if she was 30, she is still an adult, right?

Signed Letters from BOTH Parents giving you permission to be crossing the border. Letters must have both their addresses and contact phone numbers so border guards can call the parents if they think it necessary.

That would be both of your parents, unless one is deceased, or they're divorced and one has full custody. You'd be smart to have your passport, or your ID & birth cert w/ you.

Back in the day, I crossed the US / Canada border for day trips all the time, just by stating that I was born in the US. How times have changed.
