?To build a Fire? is probably one of Jack London?s best stories. In this story, a nameless character goes outdoors on a terribly cold day in the Yukon. Except for a dog, he is traveling completely alone to a mining camp. Foolishly confident of his ability to survive the unusually harsh cold, he does not understand the dangers of the northern wilderness.
The dog knows instinctively that they are certainly in a bad situation. It slinks fearfully along at the man?s heels and seems to question his every moment. Soon both the dog?s muzzle and the man?s beard are frosted with ice.
Along the way, the man accidentally falls into a hidden stream. Desperately, he builds a fire under a tree to avoid frostbite. The flames slowly grow stronger. Unfortunately, he has built his fire in the wrong place. A pile of snow suddenly falls from a tree limb and kills the fire. Unable to relight the fire, the man again finds himself in serious trouble.

thanks.
there should be 20 and the rest is : Based on what you now know about the story, what kind of ending would you write for ?To Build a Fire??

that's not quite the way I remember the story - rats
will have to read it, again

thought it was the second fire that was his undoing

also thought he had a companion that he dismissed
half way out

he really did not understand what -50 degrees below means

conclusion - stoopid actions can have fatal results

have a great 2008!

Besides the -ly words, I see these adverbs & adverb phrases:

outdoors
on a terrible cold day
Except for a dog
alone
not
along
at the man's heels
soon
with ice
Along the way
under a tree
to avoid frostbite
from a tree limb
to light the fire
again

alone & along

are also adverbs in addition to the lys that you found.

The ending you're going to have to create yourself. It's going to take some hard thinking and some above average writing. I think you should develop an ending that involves the dog leading the man to safety, maybe to a cabin where there is shelter and firewood; something like that.
