Default Which Spanish Pronunciation to learn??????

I want to learn Spanish, aim to be able to speak it fairly fluently and converse far beyond "Hi how are you?" and directions etc.
I chose to learn Spanish because it is spoken in so many different areas of the world, so I thought it would be more useful to me then, for example, Italian.

However now I have a problem. I understand there will be diff dialects etc - but which version of spanish is spoken (OR UNDERSTOOD!!) in most places? I would like to travel to spain, but also (and especially) places like peru to visit the Inca monuments, so will I have to relearn a different pronunciation later if I pick the wrong one now??? Will people understand me despite the pronounciation change? Which is universally understood? And does the dialect matter? Which do I go for!! Please help!
Thanks
x
